The StorageTek 9840 is a center-load, quick-access tape with a capacity of 20 GB uncompressed and about 40 GB compressed.
The cartridge contains two spools, so the tape always remains inside the cartridge, which gives it fast load and unload times.
The tape cartridge design is unique to the StorageTek T9840 drive and cannot be read in the StorageTek T9940, or in other drives such as 3480 or 3590.
DISC reads and writes 9840 tapes from the T9840, T9840A, and T9840B drives.
